The Budget Battle and Duplication of Government Programs

There’s a lot of talk in the news today about a new GAO report that identifies duplication of government programs. Elimination of some of these programs and an evaluation of the effectiveness of others could save taxpayers billions of dollars. But Congress winds up looking like a bunch of jackasses because they won’t listen to their own accounting office.
Did you know the FDA has one program that oversees the safety of whole eggs and the USDA has another program that oversees the safety of egg products? I found these two programs on government web sites after less than 5 minutes of googling. Why can’t congress critters find the same things and combine the two programs into one of the agencies?
Common sense seems to have no place in the budget negotiations going on in Washington.
