Rand Paul’s Senate Filibuster

Official portrait of United States Senator (R-KY).

I have to admit, I was fascinated by Senator Rand Paul’s filibuster yesterday. He held up the nomination of John Brennan for CIA director to draw attention to the government’s illegal drone program.

Rand Paul’s 12 hour and 52 minute filibuster was one of the ten longest. (Strom Thurmond (D) once spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes to protest a civil rights bill in 1957.) This kind of filibuster is rare. Typically, senators “filibuster” by refusing to grant the majority the 60 votes needed to proceed to a final vote on certain bills.

Top Five Filibusters
Sen. Strom Thurmond (D) 24 hours 18 minutes
Sen. Alfonse D’Amato (R) 23 hours 30 minutes
Sen. Wayne Morse (I) 22 hours 26 minutes
Sen. Robert La Follette Sr. (R) 18 hours 23 minutes
Sen. William Proxmire (D) 16 hours 12 minutes

Of course he was criticized by Democrat leaders. The same leaders who would have disapproved of the drone program during the Bush administration. Hypocrites!

Some of the best quotes from Senator Paul’s speech:

“I will speak until I can no longer speak.”

“Where’s the cacophony that stood up and said ‘How can tap my phone without going to a judge first?’ I say: ‘How can you kill someone without going to a judge first?’”

“Are you going to just drop a hellfire missile on Jane Fonda? Are you going to drop a missile on Kent State? … That’s gobbledygook.”

“I think its also safe to say that Barack Obama of 2007 would be right down here with me arguing against this drone-strike program if he were in the Senate.”

“I have allowed the president to pick his political appointees… But I will not sit quietly and let him shred the Constitution.”

“Are you so afraid that you are willing to trade your freedom for security?”

“No one politician should be allowed to judge the guilt, to charge an individual, to judge the guilt of an individual and to execute an individual. It goes against everything that we fundamentally believe in our country.”

Ran Paul should be praised for standing up and speaking to protect our civil liberties. It’s insane to criticize him. Blocking hyper militarization within our own borders is something everyone should support!
